The 6th International Degrowth Conference for ecological sustainability and social equity took place in Malmö, Sweden 21-25 August 2018, with two twin conferences the same year – in Mexico City, Mexico (4-6 September 2018) and at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium (18-19 September 2018).
The Malmö conference included a range of social, cultural and activist events and was inspired by principles of care, mutual aid and democratic decision-making.
Below you will find the concluding message from the organisers, as well as key information about the conference. There is further information about the conference on the website, under the ‘6th International degrowth conference’ menu.
Dear all,
Now that the 6th International Degrowth Conference is over, we would like to thank everyone for your participation and involvement!
Your contributions made these five days truly wonderful and inspiring, and we hope the energies and discussions from the conference will keep flourishing in various other spaces. The conference hosted 800 participants. We are happy to have seen people from all over the world and various paths in life who are part of the movement, as well as the many new faces and the interest from general public at this event. During the conference, over 150 entangled and mutually enriching events took place, bringing together academic, activist and artistic means to both problematise the growth-driven world of today and discuss informed ways to transform it, using mutually enriching methods and takes on the issues.
The paths of many of us will definitely cross again soon, whether in action, praxis or the very fruitful further discussion on the topic. Meanwhile, we in the organising group are continuing the activities of Institutet för nerväxtstudier and will keep building dialogues – as well as knowledge and action – in these turbulent times. If you have any questions to us, whether about the conference or involvement in our post-conference life, please send us an email at info@malmo.degrowth.org.
